The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues this week with a series of moments in preparation of the John Merritt Classic on Sept. 1. Today's moment features the last meeting between the football teams from Tennessee State and Florida A&M.
On Sept. 25, 2010, the TSU Tigers and FAMU Rattlers met in the Atlanta Football Classic at the Georgia Dome. Tennessee State entered the game having lost eight straight to the Rattlers, but walked away with a 29-18 victory.
It was the first time since 2001 the Tigers captured a win against the Rattlers in the AFC with 54, 202 fans, alumni and students on hand at the end of the game to soak in the victory.
TSU notched its second win of the season and racked up a season-high 413 yards- 304 on the ground. The Tigers also did not have a single turnover during the contest.
Senior running back Preston Brown rushed for a career high and Classic record, 233 yards on 28 carries, averaging 8.3 yards per rush. He was named Classic MVP, receiving his second player of the game award in the 2010 season.
The Tigers came out strong to open the game and on the first drive, Brown busted through the Rattlers' defense on his first carry for a 71-yard touchdown run. The score capped a two-play drive on Brown's yardage and ignited the Tigers' attack.
After holding FAMU to a three and out, TSU scored on its next possession when Jeremy Perry connected with Joseph Hills on a 15-yard strike. Perry finished the game completing 8-of-16 passes for 109 yards and Hills caught a team-high three receptions for 35 yards.
With a 22-6 lead in the fourth, Dante Thomas scored the Tigers' last points with a three-yard run. He helped maintain a strong rushing attack; finishing with 84 yards on 13 carries posting 6.5 yards per rush.
On defense, TSU recorded 11 sacks while holding FAMU (2-2) to 24 yards rushing behind Rico Council and Sidney Tarver. Council tallied seven tackles and a game-high three sacks while Tarver posted two sacks.
The Tigers only won three games in 2010, but swept all three HBCU opponents. The 2010 victory over the Rattlers surely left a sour taste in their mouths, so FAMU will be looking for revenge on Saturday. Meanwhile, TSU will be looking to start a new winning streak of its own in the 2012 John Merritt Classic.
The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
