Nashville, Tenn. - Another duo from Tennessee State University was named preseason All-Americans as center Sherman Carter was honored by the College Sports Journal and return specialist Weldon Garlington was recognized by Boxtorow.
Carter, a LaVergne High School product, was named to the College Sports Journal FCS Preseason All-America Second Team. The senior started 23 consecutive games for TSU. During the 2011 season, Carter graded out 85 to 88 percent with five knockdowns. The senior was named second team All-Ohio Valley Conference by the coaches and sports information directors in 2011. Earlier this summer, he was named second team All-American with teammate Rogers Gaines by the Phil Steele College Football Preview.
Garlington, a sophomore from Antioch, was named to the Boxtorow Preseason
All-American team. The preseason team is made up of 27 of the top HBCU football
players in the country. The voters are comprised of writers and media members who
cover HBCU football.
As a freshman, Garlington led the Ohio Valley Conference in punt return average (19.4) and returned a kick and punt for a touchdown. He also averaging 20.9 yards per kick return and scoring a touchdown.
This is the sixth year of the Boxtorow Preseason HBCU Football All-American team. FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW and Boxtorow Lunch are the national sports talk shows which place major emphasis on HBCU Sports.
