Tennessee State University freshman Weldon Garlington was named National Kickoff Returner of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards on Monday for his standout performance against Austin Peay last weekend.
Garlington, a native of Antioch, returned four kicks for 133 yards. His best was a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the contest.
The freshman became only the fourth student-athlete in school history to return a kickoff the full length of the field. He was the first to accomplish the feat since Avion Black did it twice during the 1999 season.
Through five games this season, Garlington is averaging 30.7 yards per return. His average ranks eighth in the NCAA and second in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Tennessee State University returns home to host Southeast Missouri State on Oct. 8.
Fans are encouraged to make it to LP Field early on Saturday to take part in Tigerfest: Kids & Bikers Day. Kickoff is scheduled at 6 p.m.
