Tigers Return to LP Field to Host SEMO

The Tennessee State University football team returns to Nashville after a four-game  swing to host the defending Ohio Valley Conference Champion Southeast Missouri Redhawks. Saturday's kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.

The Tigers are looking to improve to 2-0 at LP Field this season. Last weekend, TSU (1-4, 0-2 OVC) dropped a heartbreaking 37-34 contest at Austin Peay. The Tigers racked up 466 yards in offense and led by as much as 21 points before dropping the contest. SEMO (1-1, 1-1 OVC) is coming off a 37-30 win against Eastern Illinois last Saturday.

The Redhawks and Tigers are meeting for the 20th time this weekend with SEMO holding a 10-9 edge in the series. Southeast Missouri won last year's contest, 19-17, in Cape Girardeau. No team has won back-to-back contests in this series since SEMO captured consecutive games in 2002-2003.

TSU quarterback Michael German was named OVC Co-Newcomer of the Week after 304 yard passing performance. The redshirt freshman completed 21-of-26 attempts for a 80.7 completion percentage, which ranked second all-time for a TSU quarterback. German ranks 17th in the NCAA in passing efficiency.

Freshman Weldon Garlington garnered National Kickoff Returner of the Week accolades after becoming only the fourth player in TSU history to return a kick 100-yards. A native of Antioch, Garlington returned the ball four times for 137 yards.

The Tigers are averaging 410.2 yards per game, which ranks 28th in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). TSU is first in the OVC and 16th nationally with a +1.00 turnover margin.

Defensively, the Tigers are led by seniors Rico Council and Joseph Wylie. Council leads the squad with 39 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Meanwhile, Wylie has recorded 35 tackles, an interception and a tackle for loss.

Placekicker Jamin Godfrey is first in the OVC and eighth in the FCS with nine made field goals this season. Godfrey's longest make was a 47-yard attempt at Murray State on Sept. 17.

Southeast Missouri is led by dual threat quarterback Matt Scheible. The reigning OVC Co-Offensive Player of the Week has accumulated 405 yards rushing and 510 yards passing this year. Last weekend, he scored all five touchdowns and accumulated 291 total yards in SEMO's 37-30 victory over Eastern Illinois.

Linebacker Blake Peiffer ranks fifth in the FCS with 48 total tackles and is first in the Ohio Valley.

Fans are encouraged to attend early for Tigerfest: Biker's and Kid's Day. There will be plenty of games and other events for the fans to enjoy. Also, the TSU men's and women's basketball teams will be signing autographs before kickoff.
