Nashville, Tenn. – Tennessee State University Football hosted the 2010 TSU Tee Off with the Tigers Golf Tournament this morning at the Ted Rhodes Golf Course.
In its first year, the event accommodated more than 200 people in attendance with alumni, corporate sponsors, community members and TSU administration on hand in support of the Tigers' upcoming season.
“It was a great outing and we received a lot of support from our sponsors, alumni and friends in the community,” said TSU Football head coach Rod Reed. “We expect to do this again next year, especially with everyone expressing the fun they had today.”
The tournament consisted of 19 teams in a four-person scramble playing 18 holes on the par-72 course. The teams only played the back end course, which is 6, 300 of 6, 600-yards.
A scramble, which is one of the primary forms of tournament play for charity and sponsor events, is usually played with each player teeing off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected and all players play their second shots from that spot. The better of the second shots is determined, and then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.
Corporate sponsor’s four-man teams included: Sunago Builders, INC, Bestway Janitorial Services, INC, Tennessee Orthopedic Alliance, Aramark Dining Services, Millenium Maxwell House Hotel, Dell, Tennessee Quick Cash, T-G Incorporated, Zycron, along with the Metro Nashville Airport Authority and Metro Parks and Recreation.
In addition, teams consisting of TSU supporters were headed by: Jay Eubanks, Maurice Vanderbilt, and Harvey Bowles. TSU Football formed a team along with a foursome from this year’s John Merritt Classic opponent, Alabama A&M, participating in the event. AAMU participated after TSU Football joined in on their gollf tourney a week prior to the JMC press conference.
Tennessee Quick Cash picked up the first-place award with the group of David Hood, Tom Schwartz, Conoly Brown, and Bo Dudley shooting a 55 . Individual contests were played with Lorenzo Muhammed (Maurice Vanderbilt) winning the Closest to the 15th Hole competition with Kelly Holmes (Sunago Builders) scoring the longest drive at the 10th and Phillip Harrington (Sunago Builders) hitting the longest on the 16th.
The event was capped off with a lunch buffet, awards ceremony, and a raffle for door prizes and giveaways.
The Tigers will open the 2010 season against Alabama A&M in the John Merritt Classic on September 4, 2010. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
