Six Tigers Earn All-OVC Football Honors

Tennessee State University had six players named to the 2010 All Ohio Valley Conference football team. The All-OVC football team is selected by a vote of the Ohio Valley Conference Head Football Coaches and Sports Information Directors.

Leading the Tigers on the first team was senior safety Eugene Clifford. Four Tigers were named to the second team, running back Preston Brown, offensive linemen Alex Davis and Gershom Jordan and linebacker Rico Council. Linebacker Wilson Robinson was named to the All-Newcomer team.

Eugene Clifford , a 6-2, 204 senior safety from Cincinnati, Ohio, transferred to TSU from Ohio State in 2008. Clifford is a first-team All-OVC selection for the second year in a row in 2010, following a second-team and newcomer team selection in 2008. He capped his senior season with 83 tackles, four interceptions, 10 pass breakups and 14 pass deflections in 11 games (that ranked him 10th nationally in passes defended at 1.27/game). Clifford is a national finalist for the Sports Network’s FCS Buck Buchanan Award, emblematic of the Top Defensive player in the NCAA’s  FCS division of football.

Preston Brown, a 5-10, 191 senior running back from Antioch, Tennessee (Antioch HS), rushed for 760 yards and six TDs before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the fifth game of the season. Brown rushed for over 100 yards in four of the five games, including rushing for over 200 yards in two games. He was named MVP in the Atlanta Football Classic after setting a Classic rushing record of 233 yards on 28 carries. At the time of his injury, he was leading the OVC and third in the nation (FCS) in rushing (152.0 ypg).

Alex Davis, a 6-2, 318 senior offensive guard from Sarasota, Florida (Riverview HS), was a three-year starter on the Tigers offensive line and played in every game this season. His solid blocking and leadership helped pave the way for a TSU offense that led the OVC in rushing during the first six weeks of the season.

Gershom Jordan, a 6-6, 325 senior offensive tackle from Nashville, Tennessee (Whites Creek HS), was playing his first year as an offensive tackle after switching from defensive tackle last season. Jordan also played center on the TSU basketball team during the 2008-09 season. In 2008, Jordan played tight end on the football team.

Rico Council, a 6-1, 255 junior linebacker from Chattanooga, Tennessee (Howard HS), was the team’s leader in sacks this season with 4.0 (18 yards). He was TSU’s second leading  tackler with 79 (39 solo) and registered 6.0 tackles for loss (24 yards). Council was named to the All-Newcomer team in 2008.

Wilson Robinson, a 6-2, 218 freshman linebacker from Birmingham, Alabama (Spain Park HS) was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team. Robinson has played in all eleven games and has been a starter since the third game of the year. Wilson finished the year with 24 tackles (12 solo) including  2.0 sacks (11 yards) and 3.5 tackles for loss (16 yards).
