Scrimmage Ends Week One of Tigers Spring Drills
The Tennessee State Tigers finished their first week of spring drills for head coach Rod Reed with a spirited scrimmage on Saturday (4/03). Following the scrimmage, Reed commented that he was impressed with the Tigers' play, but indicated, “we still have a way to go.”
Reed summed up the first week of drills saying that the first days were filled with a lot of teaching and the familiarization of the players with the new staff. “Obviously, when we got into full pads we had a lot of soreness, bangs and bruises, but we came out in good shape physically for the first week.”
During the Spring, Reed says his staff is looking to shore up the offensive line. To that end, several players have been moved to the offensive line in the Spring. Junior Enoch Hill (6-5, 280) has moved from tight end to center and senior Gershom Jordan (6-5, 320) defensive lineman has been moved to offensive tackle. They will join veterans Justin Ridgeway (6-5, 275) and Alex Davis (6-3, 350) on the offensive front.
“Make no doubt about it, our offense line play will be crucial to our success,” said Reed. “We need an offensive line that will allow us to run the football,” he continued to say, “we have good depth at running back and we need to open holes up front for them to gain yardage.”
Reed’s assessment the first scrimmage:
- - The defense started fast and the offense came along as play progressed
- - We had several really good runs by our running backs with four players showing well (Preston Brown, Trabis Ward, Terrence Wright and Donte Thomas)
- - DB Joe Wylie had an interception and a fumble return for a TD
- - Defensive lineman Malcolm Crawford played well
- - Linebacking corps turned in a solid performance
The Tigers will not practice on Monday, but will return to Spring drills Tuesday and Wednesday at 8:00p. They will conduct another scrimmage on Saturday, April 10th at 2:00p. The Spring game is scheduled for Saturday, April 17th following the inaugural “Legend’s Game at 2:00p.
