Johnson, Belvin, Davis Headed to NFL Camps

Three more former TSU players have signed NFL free agent contracts during the week following the 2009 NFL Draft.

Wide receivers Chris Johnson and Brandon Belvin have signed with the Oakland Raiders and the Seattle Seahawks respectively. Linebacker Maurice Davis has signed with the Green Bay Packers.

Chris Johnson, a 6-2, 185 native of Nashville, TN (Glencliff HS), led the 2008 Tigers in receiving with 779 yards on 44 receptions (17.7 ypc) and 3 TDs. Johnson also led TSU in punt returns with 7 for 93 yds (13.3 avg).  Johnson finished his TSU career with 127 receptions and 2,155 yards giving him TSU career rankings of 8th and 7th respectively.

Brandon Belvin, a 6-2, 200 lb native of Arlington, TX (Bowie HS), ranked second in TSU receiving yardage with 684 yds on 44 catches, but led the team with 8 TD catches. Belvin also had 8 kickoff returns for 98 yards (12.2 ypr).

Maurice Davis, a 6-3, 245 lb of Irondale, AL (Shades Valley HS), was a 2008 All-Ohio Valley Conference player. He led the TSU defensive in tackles for loss (11.5- 46) finishing the 2008 season as the team’s fifth leading tackler with 50 stops (25 solo), including 7 QBHs.

With the addition of these three players, Tennessee State University has six future NFL hopefuls heading to NFL camps this year from the 2008 team (1 draftee, 5 FA signees).
