TSU DEFENDERS LANDROM, HOLMES NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-OVC;WILLIAMS, JONES TABBED TO SECOND TEAM
NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State placed two players on the 2005 All-Ohio Valley Conference first team defense in linebacker Wesley Holmes and defensive back Jamar Landrom. The team was released Tuesday night by the conference office. In addition, running back Javarris Williams, who was named OVC Freshman of the Year, was second-team All-OVC and named to the All-Newcomer team. Senior defensive lineman Ernest Jones was also a second team selection. Landrom and Holmes were each stalwarts for the defensive unit which led the OVC in total defense most of the season. Landrom, 6-3, 215, from Pontiac, Mich., was fifth in the OVC in total tackles with 91, third in the OVC in tackles for loss (12.5), tied for seventh in sacks (4.0), had one interception and forced five fumbles. Holmes, 6-3, 240 from Nashville returned to the tam this season and battled through injuries down the stretch of the season. Holmes still finished with 87 total tackles which was ninth in the conference. His 9.5 tackles for loss were sixth. He also had three sacks and a forced fumble. Jones, 6-2, 300 from The Bronx, N.Y., recorded 36 tackles, six tackles for loss and quarterback sack in his second season with the Tigers. Williams rushed for 872 yards, fifth best in the league. Along with his second-team selection, he is the first TSU player to receive the Freshman of the Year award. The teams were voted upon by league head coaches and sports information directors.
