TIGERS KEEP MERRITT CLASSIC WIN STREAK INTACT;ANTHONY, RAY GARNER INDIVIDUAL HONORS

NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State University captured its sixth straight John Merritt Classic Saturday night with its 42-7 win over Alabama A&M. Coach James Reese was presented the team championship trophy while Tigers Charles Anthony and Darnell Ray received individual awards. Reese has served as head coach in five of the six Merritt Classic games. John Merritt's daughter, Bonnie Merritt Traughber, participated in the post-game presentation of the awards. Anthony had a career-high 202 yards on 26 carries in earning the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award honors. He had scoring run of one and 30 yards. Ray, a sophomore transfer defensive back, sparked the Tiger defense with a 43-yard return for a TD in the opening period. He also had five tackles, a tackle for a loss, and a pass breakup in his first TSU game. A crowd of more than 25,000 was on hand in the Coliseum for the game.
