TSU’S SAFEULLAH EARNS OVCDEFENSIVE PLAYER OF WEEK HONORS
Sunday, September 8, 2002
NASHVILLE --- Tennessee State defensive back Ahmed Safeullah has been named Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his play in the Tigers 41-8 victory over Prairie View A&M in the John Merritt Classic. Safeullah, a 6-1, 180-pound junior from Decatur, Ga., was a big-play performer for the Tigers in their fourth straight Merritt Classic win Saturday night. Safeullah had 5.5 tackles, two pass deflections, a fumble recovery, one and one-half quarterback sacks, and a pass interception return for a TD. His 85-yard return was 12 yards shy of the school record and stopped a Prairie View scoring threat and capped off a 24-point outburst in the second period. He is the first Tiger to receive the Defensive Player of the Week Award since linebacker received the honor by the conference office last September 30. The weekly awards are announced each Sunday evening by the OVC office located in Brentwood. ### 9/8/02/lw
