Welcome Tigers! In our commitment to compliance and rules education, this section is designed to provide our current student-athletes and their families about NCAA rules and other information needed to know in order to maintain eligibility to compete for Tennessee State University. Below are several links important to our student-athletes and it is designed to give general information about NCAA and OVC rules. Continuing Eligibility

All Student-Athletes Must:

  1. Be enrolled FULL-TIME
  • Minimum of twelve (12) hours (NOTE: Athletics requires a minimum enrollment of 15 hours each semester.
  • See your athletic academic advisor prior to making any course changes
  • NEVER drop/add/withdraw from a course without first consulting with your athletic academic advisor
  • If you drop below twelve (12) hours, you will be ineligible for practice, competition and athletic aid/scholarship (NOTE: Your athletic aid/scholarship will be removed from your account immediately and you will be required to pay the amount that has been removed.)
  • EXCEPTION to full-time enrollment: If you require less than twelve (12) hours to graduate in either the fall or spring semester, you must have your faculty advisor provide documentation (signed program of studies with signed letter) to be enrolled in less than twelve (12) hours prior to the first day of class. 

2. Successfully complete...

  • A minimum of six (6) credit hours each semester to be eligible the next semester (NOTE: Football student-athletes must pass a minimum of nine (9) credit hours in the fall semester to be eligible the next fall semester);
  • A minimum of eighteen (18) credit hours during the academic year (fall and spring--does not including summer classes);
  • FRESHMEN: A minimum of twenty-four (24) credit hours prior to the start of your sophomore year or 3rd semester (summer classes may be used); AND
  • Declare a major before your junior year (or 5th semester) of full-time enrollment. A program of studies signed by you and your academic advisor must be turned in to Records and provide Academic Services or Compliance with a copy.

Countable Athletically Related Activities

Each sport is required to declare its playing season at the beginning of the academic year. Based on each sport's declared playing season, the following limitations generally apply:

IN-SEASON

  • Four Hours Per Day
  • 20 Hours Per Week
  • Required One Day Off Per Week

OUT-OF-SEASON

(During the Academic Year)

  • Eight Hours Per Week
  • Up to Two Hours of Required Skill Instruction
  • Required Two Days Off Per Week
