NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Four days after dropping a game against Tennessee in Knoxville, the Tennessee State men’s basketball will try to knock off another SEC opponent in Auburn on Tuesday night.
Against the Volunteers, Patrick Miller led TSU (0-6) in scoring for the sixth straight time with 20 points on 5-of-10 shooting. The Chicago native also recorded season-highs with 6 assists and five rebounds.
Miller has been the team’s go-to player all season long and the senior leads TSU in points per game (22.2), steals (nine), assists (20), three-pointers (10), field goals (46) and free throws (31).
The point guard is also first in the OVC in minutes played per contest for the second consecutive season, averaging 37.7.
M.J. Rhett and Jay Harris each scored in double figures against Tennessee as Rhett finished with 14 and Harris poured in 12.
Harris has really come on as of late and has matched his career-high of 12 points in back-to-back contests. The junior is a spark-plug coming off of the bench defensively, but has emerged as a leader at the offensive end.
Harris is sixth in the conference in free throw shooting, having made 15-of-18 for an 83 percent conversion rate. His contributions at the line have allowed the Tigers to shoot 73 percent as a team, ranking them fourth in the league.
TSU will need all the freebies it can get against Auburn who are fresh off two wins over OVC teams, Jacksonville State (78-54) on Tuesday and Murray State (75-67) on Saturday.
Auburn (3-1) is led by Chris Denson and KT Harrell who are averaging 21.8 and 18.3 points per game, respectively.
AU is getting done on the glass, the Tigers are plus-7.5 in rebounding margin, and scoring early, having outscored opponents in the first half 150 to115.
TSU is 0-1 against Auburn and lost 89-56 in the only meeting during the 2006-07 season. TSU is 1-21 all-time against teams for the SEC and the school’s only win came over South Carolina in 2011-12.
Tigers meet Tigers at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night in Auburn, Ala.
