Clarksville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State women’s golf team ran into trouble during the first round of the F&M Bank Austin Peay Intercollegiate. The young Tiger squad shot a 72-over, 360 at the Par-72, 5,960 yard Clarksville Country Club.
Sarah Needleman led the Tigers as she shot a career low 86 as she hit 11 fairways and eight greens on the day. Needleman used consistency on the par-3’s, as she pared four of the five on the course.
Kelly Merkel carded one birdie during her 17-over, 89. On the par-5, 2nd, Merkel’s drive found the right side of fairway and landed underneath a tree on the dog-leg uphill right. The sophomore followed with a knockdown 4-iron from 190 out that landed 20 yards in front of the green and chipped to 1-foot of the pin to set up the birdie.
Freshman Natalie Spicer hit seven fairways and five greens on her way to an 18-over, 90. Spicer was able to convert up-and-downs on the 10th, 14th, 15th and the 17th.
Amelia Dap recorded the final scoring round for TSU with a 95. The sophomore used an up-and-down on the par-5, 2nd, for one of her four pars on the day.
Laura Bremer cut 11 strokes from the front nine to the back nine and finished the day with six greens and averaged just over two putts per hole.
The Tigers will play the final round on Tuesday at 8:30am.
