Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State women’s golf team finished two strokes off of their record setting first round during the final round of the Fifth Annual Drake Creek Invitational hosted by Murray State. The final round temperatures were in the lower-to-mid 80’s at the Par-72, 6,178-yard Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter, Ky.
As a team, the Tigers (335-350-337=1,022) finished in tenth after shooting a 337 on the final day. The host, Murray State, claimed the team title with an 887, while the Racers Delaney Howson solidified the individual title with a 5-under, 211.
Erica Edwards (78-79-79=236) shot her second consecutive 7-over, 79 to finish 17th in her first collegiate competition. Edwards carded three birdies, including the par-4, 8th, where she stuck her second shot one foot from the pin with a 9-iron from 130-yards away. The freshman hit 12-of-14 fairways and 14 greens to go along with 31 putts.
Kelly Merkel (82-93-83=258) returned to her first round form as she used four up and downs and converted a 15-foot putt for birdie on the par-4, 8th. Merkel hit eight greens, six fairways and used 31 putts to finish 11-over on Tuesday.
Natalie Spicer (87-86-87=260) saved par on the final hole of the day, the par-4, 12th, as she chipped in from the fringe from 30-feet out. Spicer registered seven pars over the final round, including the fifth, eighth and 15th, where she needed just one putt. The freshman had three up-and-downs, found 10 fairways and hit six greens on the day.
Laura Bremer (96-92-88=276) bounced back after a tough first day where she hit just 12 fairways and 12 greens. On Tuesday, Bremer found eight fairways and nine greens. On the par-5, 6th, the sophomore transfer found the green with a chip shot from 50-yards out. Bremer was able to sink a 20-foot putt to save bogey after finding the hazard on her second shot.
Needleman (88-95-89=262) used up-and-downs on the final two holes to record a non-scoring 17-over during the round. Needleman hit eight fairways and 29 putts over the final 18 holes of play.
The Tigers return to the course on Sept. 23-24, as they travel to compete at the SIU Edwardsville Invitational.
