Sevierville, Tenn. - The women's squad returned to the course to complete the final five holes of the first round and continued play on the Par-71, 5,802 yard Highlands Course at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate hosted by Tennessee Tech. With the course still showing areas of casual water and the temperatures in the low 50's, the Tigers went out as individuals, as they were not eligible for team scoring due to two withdrawals during round one.
Dap (95-90=185) led the way for TSU in the second round. She hit nine of her 14 fairways, while recording six greens. On the par-5 first, Dap dropped a 30-foot putt to save par. On the 17th, Dap strategically played the left side of the hole and was on in three. The redshirt freshman attempted a birdie putt from 25 feet away that faded just right of the hole, leaving her five feet to accomplish the par.
Merkel (90-95=185) hit 9-of-14 fairways and hit six greens in the second round. On the par-3 16th, Merkel hit her tee shot within 12 feet of the hole and just missed the putt to the left. The freshman tapped in to record a par.
On the par-3 eighth, Needleman (98-108=206) reached the green from the tee box, but the slope of the green sent the ball back down about 5o-yards from the pin. Needleman hit an up and down to six feet away, setting up a putt to walk away with a par. Needleman saved more damage by converting one-putts on three consecutive holes (10th, 11th, 12th) and then again on the 17th.
The women will continue play next week at the Alabama A&M Classic to be held in Scottsboro, Ala. from March 24-26.
