FINAL STATS

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team dropped a, 66-54, decision to Belmont Saturday night in the Curb Event Center.

Tennessee State (6-10, 2-3 OVC) played a tough first half but was unable to withstand Belmont's (11-8, 6-1 OVC) runs in the second frame.

Kesi Hess led TSU and finished with 21 points to go with three steals while Chelsea Hudson had a team best seven rebounds.

At the start of the game, Belmont jumped out to an 11-3 lead over Tennessee State. The Lady Tigers, however, maintained their composure and answered with a 14-4 run to pull even and take the lead, 17-15.

The opponents regained the advantage following the Bruins' fourth three-pointer of the half but Kesi Hess knocked down back-to-back triples to put the Lady Tigers on top, 26-24, with less than a minute on the clock.

In the final moments of the frame, BU posted five straight to make the halftime score, 29-26, in favor of the home team.

TSU made 11-of-17 free-throws in the first half and only committed five turnovers.

In the second frame, the score was close until Belmont used a spurt to go ahead, 45-38. An old fashioned three-point play by Destiney Gaston pulled TSU to within four on the Lady Tiger's next possession but the Bruins responded with nine unanswered to go up, 54-41.

Kesi Hess connected from fifteen feet to snap TSU's nearly six minute scoring drought before Chelsea Hudson hit a free-throw to make the score, 54-44.

Belmont, however, outscored TSU, 8-1, over the next few minutes to move ahead, 62-45. The Lady Tigers continued to fight but were unable to overcome the deficit.

TSU only shot 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the free-throw line and finished the game with 15 turnovers. The Lady Tigers struggled shooting the ball and only managed to connect 15-of-57 (26.3 percent).

BU shot 41.8 percent from the field (23-of-55) and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the charity stripe.

Lady Tigers return to action on Wednesday, Jan.23 at home. The Lady Tigers will face Jacksonville State at 7 p.m. in the Gentry Center.
