Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State men’s basketball team
will come home for the first time this season to play host to Fisk on Monday.
The Tigers return to Nashville after winning one of three
games in Atlanta during the Coaches Versus Cancer Classic hosted by Georgia
TSU (1-5) started the week strong, beating South Alabama,
68-57 for the team’s first win of the season. The Tigers then dropped their
second game to Georgia State on an unbelievable buzzer-beater before falling to
Monmouth in the finale, 70-81.
Senior Kellen Thornton was a force for the Tigers all week,
averaging 14 points per game while hauling in 29 rebounds. Thornton really
shined against Monmouth and had a career-high 27 points and 16 boards against
The team also got stellar play from junior Patrick Miller
who tallied 13.7 points per contest and 19 assists. Miller was also one of TSU’s
most versatile players on the week, as he recorded eight steals and 13
During the classic, the Tigers outrebounded their opponents
129-82. TSU’s dominance on the glass was a total team effort as six players
averaged at least 4 rebounds in each game.
Tennessee State’s solid week moved the squad into first
place in the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding margin. Big Blue now has 36
more rebounds (241-205) than its opponents through six contests.
The team will try to build some momentum on Monday night
after playing every game so far this season on the road.
TSU’s opponent, Fisk, comes into the game sporting a 1-3
record, having lost its last two contests by a combined 17 points.
The Bulldogs’ are led by junior forward Darrell Miller who
leads the team in both points and rebounds with 49 and 23, respectively.
Miller has good size at six-foot-seven, but he stands as
Fisk’s tallest player. This could bode well for Thornton and the rest of the
Tiger front-line, as TSU boasts five players who are taller than any member of
the Fisk unit.
