The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by looking back at a great football moment in Tennessee State history.

In 1970, the Tigers finished the regular season undefeated and earned a trip to the Grantland Rice Bowl in Baton Rouge, La.

TSU went to battle against Southwestern Louisiana, which was in essence an away game for the Tigers, and came out with the narrowest victory in school-history-26-25.

The Tigers had the legendary Joe Gilliam Jr. as the team’s quarterback and he had one of his finest seasons, throwing for over 1,500 yards on the year.

The offense also had Alfred Reese and David Davis who each had eight touchdowns (Reese had his running while Davis’ were receiving touchdowns).

The team also had three players get drafted by the National Football League after the season ended in Joe Jones, Claude Brumfield and Charles Williams. Jones was drafted in the second round while Brumfield was taken in the fifth. Miami selected Williams in the 16^th round.

There were also six All-Americans on the 1970 team. In addition to Davis and Gilliam, tackles Vernon Holland and Asbury Glover were selected to the team on offense. On defense, corner Freddie Herring and linebacker Rodger Sims earned the honor.

With a win in the Rice Bowl, coach John Merritt led TSU to a school-record 11 wins and then TSU repeated as champs in 1971.

The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
