The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by remembering a group of individuals from one team that left the school and became professionals.
In 1974, six men left TSU and entered the National Football League. Ed "Too Tall" Jones, Waymond Bryant, John Holland, Greg Kindle, Carl Wafer, and Ed Gatewood were a part of the 1973 Black College National Championship team that went finished the season 10-0 and was coached by the late John Merritt. They also finished their career's winning the last 17 games that they played and 28 of their last 29.
Ed Jones earned his iconic nickname "Too Tall" due to his pants not fitting, because he was too tall. Jones originally came to TSU to play basketball, but after two seasons he decided to play football instead. He became a two time All-American defensive lineman during his time at TSU. Jones was drafted number one overall by the Dallas Cowboys and played for 15 seasons, accumulating 106 sacks and 19 fumble recoveries. He was also a three-time All-Pro selection, as well as helping Dallas win Super Bowl XII.
Linebacker Waymond Bryant was drafted fourth overall to the Chicago Bears. Bryant played with Chicago for four seasons, starting 25 of the 53 games he played. He also intercepted four passes during his career to go along with nine fumble recoveries.
Wide Receiver John Holland was selected with the 29th pick, third overall in the second round, by the Minnesota Vikings. Holland only played one season with the Vikings, who lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in that year's Super Bowl, before playing three seasons with the Buffalo Bills. He finished his career his 35 catches for 634 yards and three touchdowns.
Offensive lineman Greg Kindle was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals, just four picks after Holland. The Houston native played in 35 games during his four year career, two with the Cardinals and two with the Atlanta Falcons.
Defensive end Carl Wafer was the fifth Tiger picked in the first two rounds as he went to the Denver Broncos with the 42nd overall pick. Wafer played two games with the Green Bay Packers and one game for the New York Giants during the 1974 season, his only NFL season.
Linebacker Ed Gatewood was drafted in the 13th round by the Buffalo Bills becoming the sixth Tigers drafted in 1974 and the 13th TSU player selected in the last two drafts.
The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments.
