Edwardsville, Ill. - SIU Edwardsville left the field on Saturday with a sweep of the Tigers on the final weekend of the 2012 season. The Cougars did so in two separate fashions to claim each win, as they needed just five innings in the opener for a 16-0 win and came from behind with three runs in the bottom of the seventh of the night cap to steal a 6-5 win.
Burke held SIUE to three runs, one earned, on five hits through six innings. The fourth-year hurler entered the seventh three outs away from her first win of the season. But after a leadoff single, the Cougars put together three infield singles, including two bunts, to close to within one with bases loaded.
SIUE then took advantage of two Tiger mistakes on one play. A passed ball allowed for the tying run to come home and the winning run followed as the throw back to the plate bounced off the first runner and rolled out of reach for defenders to make a play. Burke fell to 0-7 on the year.
TSU jumped out early with two runs in the first inning off three hits and a Cougar error. Walker scored the first run on a Rehl ground out with the second coming on an RBI single by Devin Amar that plated Gutierrez.
The Tigers added two more in the second as Tedra Alford's single chased home Davis one batter before Rehl and Gutierrez teamed up for the second run. Rehl's two out single just over second base created a play at the plate with Gutierrez racing home safely beating the throw.
The Tigers scored their final run of the game as Kate Morris stepped to the plate in the third with Troglin on third and Davis on first. Morris ripped a ball deep into left just inside the line to allow Troglin to jog home. The ball would get away just a bit from the Cougar outfield, but SIUE put together a perfect relay to get a head-first diving Davis just before touching the plate. Morris made it all the way to third on the play, but was left on base at the end of the half inning.
TSU missed opportunities to push more runs across by leaving runners on every inning, ten all together. In the fifth, Troglin just missed her first career home run as it hit off the top of the fence and returned to the field for a double. The Tigers would strand runners at second and third. In the seventh, Jennifer Givens was hit by a pitch, giving the OVC leader in stolen bases an opportunity to add to her total. Givens swiped second on the first pitch and advanced to third as the throw sailed into centerfield. The junior speedster was left 60-feet away.
In all, the Tigers collected 13 hits in the game, which is the second highest total on the season. TSU had a season high 14 base knocks on March 2 in an 8-6 loss to Gardner-Webb.
In the opener, the Cougars dominated from start to finish scoring two runs in the first, five in the second, three in the third, and six in the fourth. SIUE used a 13 hit attack with five walks, two hit by pitches and two Tiger errors to tally the 16-0 win.
Rehl and Walker collected the only two hits in the first game for TSU. Shea Morris took the loss and is now 11-22.
The Tigers (14-39, 4-25) and Cougars (23-28, 13-15) will close out the regular season with a single game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
