Memphis, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University men's and women's tennis teams picked up two 6-0 victories each over Mississippi Valley State on Monday at a neutral site.
The women improved to 2-11, while the men upped their record to 2-10. MVSU's women fell to 0-14, while the men dropped to 0-11.
In men's doubles action, Lawrence Washington/Shaun Ingram won two 8-0 matches over the Delta Devils duo of Chartese Jones and Samuel Harris. William Simmons/Jared Asher combined to knock off Reginald Holmes/Issac Morris 8-0 in both contests.
Washington, a senior from Canton, Mich., finished his career with 7-4 record this season. Washington picked up a complete sweep (6-0, 6-0) in the first match over Jones and won the second contest 6-0, 6-1.
Ingram snagged two points over Holmes, while Simmons defeated Harris two times in the three hole. Jared Asher combined for a 6-2, 6-3 win in match one over Morris, while sweeping the last contest. James Shelton won the sixth point by default.
The women's doubles tandem of Melynda Simmons/Kryston Mason knocked off Tiffany Rose/Charity White 8-0 in both matches. Shardel Suber/Khadijah Williams won two 8-0 contests against MVSU's Zoraya Kentch/Jessica Baymon.
In singles competition, Melynda Simmons swept White (6-0, 6-0) both times. Lauren Thomas won the two spot, 6-0, 6-0 over Rose in each contest.
Mason snagged a 6-2, 6-0 win over Baymon in the first meeting, while notching a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the second match. Suber defeated Kentch in both contests, as Williams defeated Lu'Tryce Phillips in each match.
Tuesday's victory for the women's program was the first since 2004. Tennessee State closed out the regular season on Tuesday. TSU's season ends after falling short of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
