Nashville, Tenn. --- Women's basketball junior Jasmin Shuler and associate athletic trainer Patrice Elder received Service Learning Awards at the 2012 Community Partners Luncheon put on by the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement.

The mission of the Center for Service Learning & Civic Engagement is to facilitate quality educational experiences through community-based service learning. The Center connects campus and community resources to create diverse learning experiences and to serve community needs.

Jasmin Shuler was the recipient of the Undergraduate Student Service Award while Patrice Elder received the Staff/Administrator Community Service Award.

The Student Service Awards honor one full-time undergraduate student and one full-time graduate student who have made service an integral part of their college experience by their significant contributions to the campus and community. The recipient's efforts build partnerships between the campus and community, are supported by personal reflections about the service, and demonstrate a commitment to lifelong engagement. The recipients also have demonstrated leadership by making multiple contributions to TSU and the community through community service involvement.

"It truly is a blessing from God to receive this award," commented Jasmin Shuler. "I felt very honored to be in the presence of legendaries such as Dr. Fuller as she receive her legacy award as well as the other attendees that are about business and serving their community. Tennessee State University is all about community service and as a student-athlete service is very important to me. With the Centennial Celebration approaching its time for a change and for students to step up and really be about helping one another in the community. This is an award that I will always appreciate and will never forget."

The Staff/Administrator Community Service Award honors full-time staff member/administrator who demonstrates excellence in service to the community through both personal and professional volunteer service. The recipient's service activities are collaboratively developed with community members and demonstrate a commitment to advocating for service on campus and beyond.

Associate head athletic trainer Patrice Elder had this to say: "It is an honor to receive the 2012 Staff/Administrator Community Service/Service Learning Award. My family instilled in me the essence of volunteering at a young age.  I thank God for them, being nominated by my supervisor, Monroe Abram, and for the success of the athletic training program.  The reward of teaching the athletic training students cannot be explained in just this quote.   They amaze me by their growth and maturity in learning this profession.  I experience multiple benefits in working with the students every day and I always pray for the continued growth of this program and our department.  I am passionate about athletic training and I love spreading it to others."

In 2011 The TSU Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was recognized with the Outstanding Student Organization Community Service Award during the luncheon.
