Nashville, Tenn. - Tennessee State University tennis fell to Western Kentucky on Thursday afternoon at the TSU Tennis Complex. The men dropped a 6-1 match, while the women fell 7-0 to the Hilltoppers.
TSU battled in the men's contest, but dropped to 0-5 this season. The women's loss also put the Tigers at 0-5. WKU's men improved to 5-6, while the women moved to 8-4.
In men's doubles action, the No. 1 tandem of Lawrence Washington/Shaun Ingram fell 8-4 to Craig Kirchgessner/Lance Freeman. In the second doubles slot, Kaleb Ball/Brody Freeman topped William Simmons/Jared Asher 8-1.
Washington won the lone singles point for the Tigers with a 7-5 and 6-0 victory over Arul Selvan. Lance Freeman knocked off Ingram 6-1, 6-0 in the second slot.
Simmons fell 6-2 and 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker) to Andrew Fish. Asher fell in straight sets to Kirchgessner (6-0, 6-0). Witzgall won in the five spot (6-0, 6-0) over James Shelton. TSU forfeited the No. 6 point.
In the women's contest, WKU swept the doubles set as Monta Reinfelde/Madeline Phillips won 8-3 over Lauren and London Thomas in the top spot. Alex Crofford/Carolina Barboza defeated Melynda Simmons/Kryston Mason, 8-3. In the third spot, WKU's Katrina Vucina/Morgan Freeman knocked off Shardel Suber/Khadijah Williams (8-1).
Tennessee State's Simmons dropped the No. 1 point (7-5, 6-1) to Reinfielde. Barboza won 6-3, 6-2 over London Thomas in the No. 2 slot. Lauren Thomas fell 6-0, 6-1 to Crofford.
In the four spot, Vucina defeated Mason (6-0, 6-2) and Phillips swept Suber (6-0, 6-0). In the No. 6 spot, Freeman defeated Williams (6-0, 6-0).
Tennessee State remains home on Saturday. The men host Tennessee Tech at 11am, while the women take on Southeast Missouri at 10am. TSU's ladies take on UT Martin on Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
