HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – The Tennessee State men’s golf team posted the sixth lowest round on the final day of the F&M Bank Austin Peay Intercollegiate. The Tigers finished with a 8-over, 296 on a windy day on the Par-72, 7,108 yard Links at Novadell in Hopkinsville, Ky.
TSU (298-300-296=894) ended the tournament in 13th, as they used their play to serge past Morehead State.
On Monday, over 50 of the 87 man field shot even par or better. Tuesday was a different story as the course surrendered just 20 scores of 72 or lower. On Tuesday, TSU had two golfers among the 20 after not having anyone reach the score on Monday. Blake Burgett shot a team low 1-under, 71 and was followed by James Stepp’s even par, 72.
The Tigers day one leader, Andrew Warner (74-73-76=223) added a 4-over, 76, while Dallas Hill shot a 5-over, 77. Senior Codie Welborn registered a non-scoring 83.
Burgett (78-80-71=229) entered the clubhouse on Monday at 14-over. On Tuesday, Burgett found his zone as he sank three birdies to finish the day 1-under. The sophomore transfer finished the day hitting 13 of 14 fairways and 11 greens.
Through 36-holes, Stepp (73-77-72=222) carded 30 pars and no birdies. Tuesday’s final round saw the junior drop five birdies. Stepp just missed holing-out for eagle from 165-yards out on the par-4 12th. Stepp used 33 putts and hit 12 of 14 fairways and 13 greens to accomplish the round.
Hill (78-74-77=229) scored his only birdie of the day on the par-4, 2nd. Hill sank a seven foot slight-uphill putt after using a pitching wedge from 133-yards out to set up the birdie attempt.
Welborn (73-76-83=232) highlighted the day with a birdie on the par-3, 4th. The senior used a hybrid off the tee box and landed two feet to the left of the pin.
The Tigers concluded the fall portion of their schedule and will be off until March 10-11. TSU will open the spring season at the Grover Page Classic hosted by UT Martin in Jackson, Tenn.
