TSU Sprinters and Jumpers Prevail in Rhodes Open

Memphis, Tenn. – The Tennessee State men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the 2013 Outdoor Season with 10 first-place finishes at the Rhodes Open.

For the Tigerbelles, sprinters Ashontae Jackson and Quanisha Sales led the way by taking home titles in the 400 and 100-meter dashes, respectively. Jackson ran her event in 56.54 seconds which was nearly one second faster than her next closest competitor. Sales held off a pair of runners from Mississippi Valley State to win the 100-meter with a time of 11.83 seconds.

Jackson and Sales then paired with teammates Clairwin Dameus and Leslye Williams to place first in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 46.64 seconds.

A team of four Flying Tigers also stood atop the podium when Travon Alexander, Royce Dates, Daryl Rice and Tyler Anderson ran the men’s 4x100 relay in 42.24 seconds.

Rice won his second event of the day with a leap of 2.08 meters in the high jump and Dates took home first with a hop of 7.31 meters in the long jump.

Another Flying Tiger who had a big day was Jason Griffin who won both the 400 and 110-meter hurdles. Griffin won the 400 with a time 54.52 seconds and edged teammates Shawn Harris and Chris Hawkins in 110 meter after clearing the event in 15.09 seconds.

Ja’Lyn Burr rounded out the winners for TSU by leaping 1.63 meters in the women’s high jump.

Tennessee State will next travel to Columbia, S.C. for the Weems Baskin Relays on Mar. 23.
