The Tennessee State University men’s and women’s cross country teams stay in the Music City this weekend by racing in Vanderbilt’s Commodore Classic on Saturday, Sept. 17.
The meet starts with the men’s 8K race at 8:45 a.m., followed by the women’s 5K at 9:30 a.m. Vaughn’s Gap Cross Country Course at Percy Warner Park will be the host site for the event.
Approximately 23 teams are scheduled to run in Saturday’s meet. There will be eight regionally ranked programs running on Saturday, including Alabama (men and women), Belmont (m), Cincinnati (w), Lipscomb (w), Middle Tennessee (m), Tennessee (m) and Vanderbilt (w).
Two Ohio Valley Conference opponents, Jacksonville State and Tennessee Martin are on the entry list.
Last weekend, the Flying Tigers and Tigerbelles placed sixth overall in the PowerAde Invitational in Chattanooga.
Senior Chris Hobbs was the pacesetter for the Flying Tigers, notching a time of 17:32 in the 5K. Jonathan Owens finished immediately behind his teammate at a mark of 17:40.
In the women’s two-mile race, freshman Leah Carr led the Tigerbelles by posting a time of 13:59. Memphis native Charita Harris came in second for TSU at 14:01.
“We are going up in distance this weekend,” said TSU Track & Field Director Chandra Cheeseborough-Guice. “Our main goal is to drop our times, while competing against a strong field.”
