Dr. Johnnie C. Smith is the Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services for the Athletic Department at Tennessee State University. She joined the TSU Athletics Department in December 2004.
Dr. Smith has been influential in setting higher standards for all of TSU student-athletes. For example, she was instrumental in the football team's academic success, in one year, improving from 6th place to a 2nd place finish in the conference academic standing.
She has over 20 years of higher education experience in counseling, advising, administration and management, and a proven track record of academic success. Prior to developing academic trails at TSU, she held three different positions at Austin Peay serving as the university's Academic Coordinator for the Athletics Department, Director of Academic Advising and Counselor/Recruiter for Academic Affairs.
In her first year as the Academic Coordinator at Austin Peay State University, the university earned its first Conference Academic Achievement Banner. During her second year, the men's basketball team averaged the highest team GPA (2.90) in school history.
Dr. Smith is a member of several professional organizations. Currently, she serves as a member of the NFL/N4A (National Athletics Academic Advisors Association) Advisory Board. In her spare time, she provides educational assistance to football professionals and their family members.
She is very engaged in her community, and the most endearing aspect is her active membership in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Most recently noted, Dr. Smith had an article published in the NFL Journal titled “Thinking Beyond the Grid-Iron”.

Also, Dr. Smith was named by the TSU National Alumni Association Alumni Outreach Magazine Associates as an "Outstanding Alumna" for Fall 2011.
Dr. Smith earned her bachelor's degree at Austin Peay State University. She received her master's from Murray State University in 1992, and a doctoral degree from Tennessee State University in 2000. A native of Fort Mitchell, Alabama, Dr. Smith is married to Fred Michael and has one son, Lorinzo and step-daughter, Sade'.
