NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With the new academic year approaching many incoming students are coming to Tennessee State to get an early start on their course studies or to become more familiar with the university. TSU provides the opportunity for first years to experience both with an Academic Boot Camp.

This summer, 35 student-athletes joined another 126 incoming freshmen for the combined four-week residential initiative for incoming freshmen, to earn academic credit. The program includes a rigorous academic and college preparedness program, introduction to college life, public speaking, workshops and technology. Physical and mental development exercises, such as self-discipline, respect for others, good study habits and how to succeed in life, are also key components of the program.

“We are so excited our incoming freshmen student-athletes have this awesome opportunity to get an early jump start to college life,” said Academic Coordinator Dr. Johnnie Smith. “Once students return in August they will be ready for the challenge of being a student-athlete.”

The program saw an increase over last year where 20 student-athletes participated in the boot camp. The university announced an 18% percent increase in their total enrollment.

“The best part of this experience is the boot-campers gain three college hours toward their degree program,” stated Smith. “It is truly a win-win for all involved as we improve upon retention and graduation.”
