Home Winning Streak Ends with Loss to SIUE

FINAL STATS

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team had its five-game home winning streak snapped, Saturday night, after falling to SIU Edwardsville, 74-66, in the final home game of the season.

TSU (10-17, 7-7 OVC) forced SIUE (10-18, 6-9 OVC) into 20 turnovers but struggled offensively most of the night.

Chelsea Hudson just missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds while Jayda Johnson (14), Brianna Lawrence (13) and Rachel Allen (11) also posted in double-figures.

SIU Edwardsville also had four players to reach double-digits led by Tierny Austin’s 15 points. Micah Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds while Valerie Finnin and Allyssa Decker scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Tennessee State got off to a slow start and fell behind, 26-12, at the 11:07 mark. Later in the half, Alana Morris found Chelsea Hudson and Jayda Johnson in the paint on consecutive plays to cut the deficit down to single digits.

SIUE shot 66.7 percent in the first half but TSU used a 13-7 run, fueled by triples from Brianna Lawrence and Rachel Allen, to pull within four, 36-32, before the halftime break.

Brianna Lawrence buried her fourth three-pointer of the game to christen the second half and pulled TSU to within one. The visitors, however, went back up by five and maintained the lead for the next several possessions.

Tennessee State took a, 45-44, lead when Jemilah Leonard buried a triple from the top of the key with 15:08 remaining. The Cougars regained the advantage on their next trip down the floor but the Lady Tigers stayed within striking distance.

Jayda Johnson’s bucket with 12:16 on the clock tied the score, 48-48, and from there, the teams traded scores.

TSU was trailing, 53-51, when SIUE used four straight points to go ahead, 57-51. The Cougars increased their advantage to, 64-55, with just under six minutes left to play.

Hudson scored in the paint to slice the SIUE lead down to five before TSU closed to within two, 67-65.

SIUE, however, finished with a 7-1 run to put the game away.

Tennessee State shot 32.4 percent from the field, including a dismal 28.0 percent from the three-point line. TSU only managed to make, 15-of-31 (48.4 percent) from the free-throw line.

SIU Edwardsville shot 56.5 percent from the field and 40 percent from long range while making 20-of-28 from the charity stripe.

Tennessee State returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 27 at Morehead State.
