Butler Picks up 13 Kills as TSU Falls at Morehead State 3-0

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Tennessee State drops first Match of the weekend 3-0 (17-25, 19-25, 30-32),despite 13 kills from Sherryce Butler.

Junior Sherryce Bulter posted her 11th double-digit kill performance of the year to pace the Tigers attack Friday night. The 13 kills marked the second match in a row that the Tiger attacker had reached ten or  more kills in a match.

Both junior Naomi Wells and freshman Arijana Anderson put in strong efforts on the offensive end with eight and seven kills respectively. Wells played well on the defensive side also picking up 10 digs and two blocks.

Senior Erika Moss dished out 33 assists on the evening to jump start the Tigers attack.

In the first set Morehead State (22-6, 13-0) raced out to an 11-5 lead. Tennessee State (10-14, 6-7) responded with four straight points to close within two at 11-9. The run consisted of three errors from the Eagles and a kill from junior Sherryce Butler.

The home team extended the lead out to seven points, 19-12, on the back of an 8-3 run. TSU closed within six three times, with the latest coming at 21-15. Morehead proved to be too much finishing off the set 25-17.

Tennessee State began the second frame in a tight contest. After a Butler kill trimmed the MSU lead to 6-4, the Eagles used a 6-3 run to extend the lead to five at 12-7.

Later in the set Morehead held a 15-11 lead when the Tigers made their move. Coach Kathy Roulhac’s team used a 5-0 blitz to take their second lead of the frame. The run included kills from Wells and junior Taylor Swayzer.

Both teams traded points in the ladder end of the set, with the Eagles taking the lead for good at 18-17. MSU capped off the stanza on a 6-1 run to claim the set 25-19, to take a 2-0 lead into the break.

TSU came out on fire in the third set ripping off the first four points, a span that including an ace from Erika Moss and a kill from junior Zoe Sostre. With the Tigers leading 7-2, Morehead connected on four straight rallies cutting TSU’s advantage to a single point, 7-6.

Morehead closed within one point on seven different occasions before finally knotting the frame at 17-17. MSU gained the lead on the following play and the two OVC clubs would share three ties before TSU was on the brink of taking the set, 24-22 after a Wells kill.

The Eagles converted on the next two points to send the set to extra points. Tennessee State came within one point of taking the frame but Morehead State answered back on both occasions to stay alive. TSU took their last lead 30-29 after a kill from Anderson. MSU scored the next three points to claim the set 32-30 and the match 3-0.

Morehead State had three players finish in double digit kills, with sophomore Courtney Smith leading the way with 13.

Tennessee State returns to the court tomorrow when they pay a visit to Eastern Kentucky, that match is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
