Nashville, Tenn. – Freshman Tigerbelle jumper Clairwin Dameus is preparing to represent TSU in the 2013 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

“It’s exciting to be competing with some of the best athletes in the world. I haven’t been working on the long jump a lot this year, but I have been putting in extra time these past few weeks to prepare,” Damues said.

The event runs from June 19-23, but the Boynton Beach, Fla. native will compete in the Junior Women’s Long Jump competition at 1:10 p.m. CT on Friday. With a far enough leap, she could then qualify for the Pan Am Junior Games in Medellin, Columbia Aug. 23-25.

“I have always dreamt of going to the Olympics and my goal is be there in four years. I feel like competing this Friday is the first step in accomplishing that [goal],” Dameus said.

Dameus was a top performer in her first year at Tennessee State taking home five titles and 17 top-five finishes in the Outdoor Season.

Her career-best in the long jump was a hop of 6.14 meters at the Georgia Tech Invitational on May 10. Her performance earned her a third-place finish in the prestigious meet.

Des Moines will host some of the top junior athletes in the country, ages 16-19, with the top finishers representing the red, white and blue in Medellin, Colombia August 23 – August 25. This year’s Team USA squad will look to best the 72 medals won by Team USA at the 2011 Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships in Miramar, Florida.

Hosted by Greater Des Moines and Drake University, Iowa looks to continue long and storied legacy as a track and field destination. Drake Stadium has once before played host to the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2010, three times the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2008, 2011, and 2012, and 104 editions of the Drake Relays.
