Women's Basketball Hosts Jacksonville State on Saturday

GAMEDAY
The Tennessee State University women’s basketball team will return to action on Saturday with a conference match-up against Jacksonville State. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center. The contest will be TSU’s first of the year 2014.   
 
THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State is coming off an, 80-70, conference loss to Eastern Illinois last Saturday. The Lady Tigers fell to the Panthers on the road to open the OVC campaign. The loss extended TSU’s losing streak to four games and moved the Lady Tigers to 3-11 overall.
 
TSU is averaging 65.1 points per outing while shooting 35.0 percent from the field. Chelsea Hudson leads the team in scoring with 15.9 points per game while Rachel Allen (12.1 ppg) and I’mani Davis (7.4 ppg) round out the top scorers for TSU.
 
The Lady Tigers, under second year head coach Larry Joe Inman, returned four letterwinners from last year’s squad and added eight newcomers, including seven freshmen, to the roster. TSU finished last season with an overall record of 13-15 and a 9-7 conference mark. In an Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll that was released in October, TSU was predicted to finish fifth in the East Division standings.
 
LAST TIME OUT
TSU knocked down six three-pointers but it wasn’t enough in an, 80-70, road loss to Eastern Illinois to open OVC play. The opponent shot 54.9 percent from the field while the Lady Tigers struggled from the free-throw line with only a 52.6 percent mark. Rachel Allen poured in a career-high 22 points while Jayda Johnson (11) and Chelsea Hudson (10) also scored in double-digits for TSU. The loss was TSU’s fourth straight.  
 
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
Jacksonville State had dropped two consecutive games before defeating Samford, 60-54, in its last outing. JSU is 4-11 overall with a 0-2 conference mark. The Gamecocks have conference losses to Tennessee Tech and UT Martin.
 
In the victory over Samford, JSU was led in scoring by Miranda Cantrell’s 22 points while Candace Morton added 18. Morton also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
 
Overall, Jacksonville State is led in scoring by Candace Morton who averages 17.9 points per game. Destany McLin (12.2 ppg) and Miranda Cantrell (10.9 ppg) round out the top scorers for JSU.
 
As a team, the Gamecocks average, 62.6 points per game while shooting 38.4 percent from the field and 28.5 percent from long range.
 
TSU vs. JACKSONVILLE STATE
TSU will meet JSU for the 25th time in the program’s history. The series is tied, 12-12, as TSU claimed the last meeting, 76-67, in the Gentry Center. The Lady Tigers won both games against the Gamecocks last season and have won four straight. JSU’s last victory over TSU was a 57-55 win in the first round of the 2011 OVC Tournament.
