Charleston, Ill. – Tennessee State dropped both ends of an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader to Eastern Illinois on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers grabbed game one 7-1, before shutting out the Tigers 4-0 in game two.
The Tigers found themselves down 4-0 heading into the fourth inning. Kiarra Freeman led off the inning with the first of her two hits on the day. Freeman slapped a line drive into left center that allowed her to use her speed for her first double of the season. Two batters later, Lindsey Burgess drove a single into right center to bring home Freeman, cutting the score to 4-1.
EIU would add three more runs to come away with the 7-1 win. Shea Morris fell to 7-14 as she surrendered eight hits and a walk, while striking out five.
Game two proved to be a pitcher’s duel as Olivia Gamache and EIU’s Stephanie Maday did not allow a hit until the fourth inning. Kacie Daugherty registered the lone hit of the game for the Tigers with a double into left center.
In the bottom of the fourth with a runner on first, Bailey O’Dell ripped a double to left field for the Panthers first hit. On the play, Brooke Owens tried to score from first, but Jennifer Givens got the ball to Burgess who was able to deliver a strike to Kate Morris just in time to cut down the runner at home.
In the EIU fifth, Gamache would take a ground ball off the jaw to allow the first runner on base. The junior pitcher tried to shake off injury, but the Panthers were able to score three runs off the Tigers.
Gamache (4-13) left the game after the fifth inning allowing just two earned runs on three hits.
TSU falls to 11-27, 2-10 in the OVC. Eastern Illinois improves to 25-10, 13-1 in conference.
