Lady Tigers take on Jacksonville State for Pink Zone

GAMEDAY
The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will return to action at home to face Jacksonville State in a crucial Ohio Valley Conference contest on Saturday, Feb. 18. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in the Gentry Center. The Lady Tigers will wear their pink jerseys for Pink Zone.  

THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State (8-18, 4-10 OVC) has dropped five out of its last six, including five straight. The Lady Tigers are recently coming off a, 78-66, loss to Tennessee Tech in the Gentry Center. TSU has a 4-10 OVC mark and sits in eighth place in the standings. With a 5-6 home record this season, the Lady Tigers will look to move to .500 with a win over Jacksonville State.      

As a team, TSU is averaging 65.2 points per outing while shooting 36.8 percent from the field and 28.5 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently shooting only 65.2 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 18.3 turnovers per game.

TSU averages 43.4 rebounds, 12.9 assists and 8.1 steals per game.
 
EVERY GAME MATTERS
With the OVC tournament less than two weeks away, every game is crucial. The Lady Tigers are in the play-off race and are looking to remain in the top eight with wins down the stretch.

LAST TIME OUT
Tennessee State dropped a, 78-66, decision to Tennessee Tech at home. With the loss, TSU's skid extended to five games. TSU trailed, 36-33, at the half before going on to fall, 78-66. Jasmin Shuler led TSU with 14 points while Simone Hopes had 11 points and eight rebounds. 

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Jacksonville State is coming off a, 79-60, loss to Morehead State on the road Monday night. JSU has dropped seven straight contests and has an OVC mark of 1-12, with their only win coming against Austin Peay. The Gamecocks sit in 11th place in league standings.   

In JSU's most recent loss to Morehead State, four players scored in double-figures led by Brianna Morrow and Brittany Manning as they each tallied 14. Candace Morton had 11 as Danielle Vaughn also posted 11 and recorded a double-double with 15 rebounds.   

Overall, the Gamecocks average 57.4 points per game behind a .375 field goal percentage (.245 three-point range). Briana Morrow leads the team with 11.1 points per game while Danielle Vaughn (10.8 ppg) and Destiny Lane (10.8 ppg) round out the top three scorers for JSU.

TSU vs. JACKSONVILLE STATE
Tennessee State and Jacksonville State will meet for the 22nd time in the series history with the Gamecocks holding a, 12-9, advantage. The Lady Tigers claimed the first meeting of the season, 67-57, in Pete Mathews Coliseum. 

LAST TIME THEY MET (Jan.7, 2012)
The TSU women's basketball team defeated Jacksonville State, 67-57, Saturday afternoon in Pete Mathews Coliseum.

With the victory, TSU (6-10, 2-2 OVC) picked up its first road win of the season while Jacksonville State fell to 3-14 (0-4 OVC).

Tayla Foster led TSU with 14 points and recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds. Alana Morris registered 12 points while Jasmin Shuler added 11. Rachel Allen finished the game with six points, six steals, three assists and no turnovers.

Briana Morrow tallied a double-double for JSU with 14 points and 16 rebounds while Danielle Vaughn also posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards.

Tennessee State shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the field and 13.3 percent from long range while knocking down 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the charity stripe. 

Jacksonville State only managed a 29.7 field goal percentage and went 0-for-8 from three-point range. JSU went 19-of-26 (73.1 percent) from the free-throw line.

TSU lost the battle of the boards, 58-40, but had 28 points off 29 JSU turnovers. The Lady Tigers also notched 20 bench points compared to the Gamecocks' seven.

TEAM LEADERS
Jasmin Shuler leads TSU in scoring with 15.1 ppg while Tayla Foster (9.8 ppg) and Destiney Gaston (7.3 ppg) round out the top three scorers for the Lady Tigers. Foster is pulling down a team-best 5.1 rebounds per game while Simone Hopes grabs 4.7 rpg. Rachel Allen leads the team in assists while Gaston also paces TSU with 30 blocks.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Lady Tigers will conclude the regular season with a match-up against Murray State on Thursday, Feb. 23 in the Gentry Center. Game time is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
