TSU Lady Tigers host Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday

GAMEDAY
The Tennessee State University women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, February 1 for an Ohio Valley Conference match-up against Eastern Kentucky. The Lady Tigers will play their third game in five days when they return to the Gentry Center to host EKU. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

THE LADY TIGERS AT A GLANCE
Tennessee State (8-14, 4-6 OVC) has won two out of its last four, including the most recent loss on the road to UT Martin. The Lady Tigers fell to the Skyhawks, 105-90, in the Elam Center Monday night. TSU has a 4-6 OVC mark and sits in eighth place in the standings. With a 5-4 home record this season, the Lady Tigers will look to add one to the win column against Eastern Kentucky.     

As a team, TSU is averaging 70.3 points per outing while shooting 37.8 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from beyond the arc. TSU is currently shooting only 65.8 percent from the free-throw line while committing an average of 19.2 turnovers per game.

TSU averages 43.5 rebounds, 13.0 assists and 8.3 steals per game.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Tennessee State once again put on a high-scoring performance but ultimately dropped a, 105-90, decision to UT Martin Monday night.  Chelsea Hudson had a career-night by posting 38 points and 17 rebounds for a double-double. Kim Haynes matched her career-high with 20 points while Jasmin Shuler scored 18. Rachel Allen tallied a game-best nine assists and recorded seven rebounds for TSU.

FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
For her 38-point, 17-rebound performance, Chelsea Hudson was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week. She is the second TSU player to be named Freshman of the Week and the fourth Lady Tiger to receive an OVC weekly honor.

ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Eastern Kentucky (10-10, 5-4 OVC) has lost two of its last three contests,  including most recently an, 82-67, lost to Tennessee Tech on the road. The Lady Colonels opened the conference season with a 4-1 record before going 1-3 over the last four games.

In EKU's most recent loss to Tennessee Tech, Marie Carpenter led the team with 13 points while Jade Barber added 12. Alex Jones followed with 11 points and seven rebounds. 

Overall, the Lady Colonels average 64.8 points per game behind a .397 field goal percentage (.312 three-point range). Marie Carpenter leads the team in scoring with 13.7 ppg while Jade Barber averages 11.4 ppg. Alex Jones leads the team with 7.9 rpg and rounds out the top three scorers with 8.9 ppg.

TSU vs. EASTERN KENTUCKY
Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky will meet for the 50th time in the long series history with EKU leading, 34-15. EKU claimed the first meeting of the season, 79-59, in McBrayer Arena.

LAST TIME THEY MET
TSU led, 31-30, at halftime but was outscored, 48-29, in the second frame.

Tayla Foster led TSU with 21 points while Destiney Gaston finished with 13.  Alana Morris grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.

EKU had four players to score in double-figures led by Marie Carpenter (17). LaRa'e Allen (13), Raechele Gray (12) and Jade Barber (10) also posted double-digits.

EKU opened up the second half with a 7-0 run to capture a 37-31 lead before TSU finally got on the board behind a bucket from Rachel Allen at the 14:56 mark.

TSU fought back and knotted the score at 44-apiece but EKU answered with a 16-5 run that put them back on top, 60-49.

TSU pulled within eight when Tayla Foster connected in the paint but EKU had another rally that put the home team on top, 69-55 with about four minutes left.

The Lady Tigers continued to fight but could not overcome the deficit.

TSU shot 30.6 percent (22-of-72) from the field, including 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from three-point range while knocking down 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free-throw line.  EKU shot 50.8 percent (30-of- 59) from the field, 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from long range and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the charity stripe.

TEAM LEADERS
Jasmin Shuler leads TSU in scoring with 15.9 ppg while Tayla Foster (11.5 ppg) and Destiney Gaston (8.1 ppg) round out the top three scorers for the Lady Tigers. Foster is pulling down a team-best 5.6 rebounds per game while Gaston averages 4.5 caroms per outing. Rachel Allen leads the team in assists while Gaston also paces TSU with 29 blocks.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Lady Tigers will return to the road to face Southeast Missouri in Cape Girardeau, Mo. on Saturday, Feb.4. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. in the Show Me Center.
