Nashville --- The Tennessee State University women's basketball team will face Jacksonville State in the opening round of the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, Wednesday, March 2 at the Municipal Auditorium.
Tennessee State University enters the tournament as the seventh seed, marking the program's 18th overall and fourth straight Ohio Valley Conference tournament appearance. The event returns to the Municipal Auditorium for only the sixth time in 29 years. The Lady Tigers have a 6-11 record in OVC Tournament games, with a 4-0 mark in the Municipal Auditorium.
The first time the OVC Tournament was held at the Municipal Auditorium (1994), TSU won the Championship. TSU also won the Championship the following year in 1995.
LADY TIGER REVIEW
Tennessee State defeated Southeast Missouri last Thursday to clinch an OVC tournament berth before falling to Eastern Illinois in the regular season finale. Destiney Gaston led TSU in scoring over both games, averaging 12.0 points per game while Meredith Stafford averaged 10.5 ppg. Avery Jones nearly averaged a double-double with 9.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg.
TSU went 4-4 in the final eight games of the regular season with the Lady Tigers winning two of their last three contests.
ABOUT JACKSONVILLE STATE
Jacksonville State (9-20, 6-12) finished just ahead of TSU in the conference race as the sixth seed. The Gamecocks have dropped five straight contests and have only won one of their last eight. Brittany Wiley is the team's leading scorer with 14.2 points per game while Danielle Beneby (9.0 ppg) and Danielle Vaughn (8.8) round out the top three scorers for JSU.
JSU averages. 60.4 points per game while shooting 36.6 percent from the field.
TSU and JSU will meet for the 20th time in the all-time series history with JSU leading, 11-8. Both teams split this season's regular series as each team won on the opponent's home court.
The first and only time that TSU and JSU met in the OVC tournament was on March 1, 2005. TSU swept the regular season series, 2-0, that year but Jacksonville State edged TSU, 65-64, in the opening round. JSU was the 4th seed and TSU was the 5th seed as the Gamecocks hosted the Lady Tigers at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
