Tennessee State University men's basketball student-athlete Chris Conner was recently honored as the Brother and Scholar of the Year in the South Central region of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

Conner, a native of Powell, Tenn., earned his bachelor's in agricultural science last Saturday. The Maryland Eastern Shore transfer posted a 3.39 GPA during his undergraduate career.

Conner had one of the highest GPAs of Kappa Alpha Psi graduates in his province. He earned the Brother of the Year award for his community service and leadership.

This past year, Conner served as the Polemarch (President) of the TSU Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi. He served the community by participating in events with the Nashville Rescue Mission and Hands on Nashville. Conner was also active in helping raise money for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis.

"Chris is an outstanding young man on and off the basketball court," said TSU head coach Travis Williams. "He exemplifies what it means to be a true student athlete by balancing academics and athletics. He has been a great role model for others here at Tennessee State."

Athletically, Conner competed in 19 games for the Tigers during the 2011-12 season, including TSU's historic win over No. 7 Murray State. Conner will pursue his master's degree and a career in athletic administration in the fall.
