The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® series continues by remembering another one of the premier basketball players in Tennessee State history.
Leonard Robinson was one of the toughest and most physical players to ever suit up for the TSU men's basketball team. His ability to score and rebound in the low-pots earned him the nickname "Truck", and the moniker stuck with him throughout his playing career.
During the mid-1970's, Robinson led the Tigers to a 99-19 record while playing under legendary coach Ed Martin. Robinson amassed 1,501 rebounds and 2,249 points at Tennessee State, but enjoyed his finest season during 1972-73 where he grabbed TSU-record 528 rebounds.
Robinson ranks third on the school's all-time scoring and rebounding lists.
After playing for the Tigers, Robinson was drafted by the Washington Bullets in the second round of the 1974 NBA Draft. The Bullets could not find a role for Robinson, so they eventually traded him to the Atlanta Hawks in 1977. During that season, Robinson averaged 19 points and 10.8 rebounds per contest for Atlanta.
Prior to the 1977-78 season, Robinson signed as a free agent with the New Orleans Jazz. In his only full season with the Jazz, Robinson turned in the finest performance of his career. At just 6-foot-7, he became one of the first non-centers ever to lead the league in rebounding, grabbing 15.7 boards per game. He also notched his career-best scoring effort (22.7 ppg), made his first All-Star appearance, and was named to the All-NBA First Team at season's end.
Robinson was later sent to the Phoenix Suns where he helped the team win a division crown in 1981. He then ended his career by playing two seasons for the New York Knicks.
In 11 NBA seasons, Robinson amassed 11,988 points and 7,267 rebounds.
The 100 Moments of TSU Athletics presented by Taco Bell® highlights some of the greatest moments in honor of Tennessee State's centennial celebration. A new moment will be released each weekday for a total of 100. These moments were chosen by the TSU 100 Moments committee, which consists of alums from various departments. TSU has so many great moments, not all can be represented in these 100.
