NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State women’s golf squad opened up play on Sunday at the ASU Fall Golf Classic. The temperatures reached the low 90’s at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in Prattville, Ala.

Alabama State leads the team scoring after shooting a 13-over, 301. The Tigers are fourth after compiling a 338; and are three shots behind Savannah State.

“I was very pleased with our first round of the year,” said head coach Parrish McGrath. “Everyone did something great today. Be it a great recovery after a bad break or making a long putt to save par.”

Amelia Dap led the Tigers with a 10-over, 82. The red-shirt junior hit 13 of 14 fairways and nine greens on Sunday. Dap scored a birdie on the par-3, 14th, as she hit a seven iron off the tee box to within three feet for birdie.

Kelly Merkel and Sarah Needleman followed Dap for the Tigers as each carded an 85. Merkel used a pitching wedge from 110-yards out and stuck her approach shot two feet from the hole on the par-4, 4th. The junior tapped in for her only birdie of the round, while hitting nine fairways and 12 greens. Needleman found 10 of 14 fairways and eight greens, but needed 33 putts to complete the round.

Natalie Spicer shot an 87 on day one by using up-and-downs on five, 12 and 13 to save par. The sophomore notched nine pars on the day.

Laura Bremer entered the clubhouse with a non-scoring 89. Bremer highlighted the day on the par-4, 15th, as she landed her second shot, from 150-yards out, eight feet above the hole. The junior sank the downhill putt for her lone birdie of the day.

Freshman Imani Stingley played as an individual, shooting a 104 in her first action.

“Tomorrow will try to spend more time on the putting green prior to our round,” McGrath said. “We had too many three putts for as good as we were striking the ball.

The final round will begin at 8:00am on Monday morning.
