NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee State football team will break-in two new outside linebackers this season following the graduations of Greg Barksdale and Wilson Robinson.

“The linebackers are playing really fast right now,” head coach and former linebacker Rod Reed said. “Nick Thrasher is obviously the leader of that group, and everyone has seen what he can do at the middle linebacker position.”

Last season, Thrasher was named All-OVC after amassing after amassing 110 tackles, the most for TSU since 2002. The senior also racked up 12 tackles for loss while forcing and recovering three fumbles. Thrasher now has 230 career tackles which puts him sixth in the school record books, and just 16 away from cracking the top-five.

There are a handful of players vying for the other two starting linebacker spots, but Reed likes what he sees so far.

“Justin North is a young kid that we think will be pretty for the first game. Van Williams from a junior college has stepped in and made some huge plays in camp. Mike West could start, too, he knows every position.”

The number of days before the first contest is dwindling down and if certain players do not break away from the competition, Reed may do something he has never done.

“We have such depth among our core linebackers that we could go two-and-a-half deep. It’s not what you want, but we feel like these guys are competitive enough to make some plays.”
