NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Wednesday marked the first day of shoulder pads for the Tennessee State football team, a session in which the defense got the better of its counterpart.

“I think that the defense set the tone today,” head coach Rod Reed said. “I thought the offense fought back towards the end, but I always get leery if the offense can dominate too early into camp.”

Among those on defense who stepped up, were redshirt freshman Everett Nicholas and true frosh Javon Brandon who both recorded interceptions.

“Javon Brandon could be vying for some playing time. He has had a solid three days of camp, but it goes the same for all young guys: you have to be able to maintain it over the course of the season,” Reed said.

With more pads on, the offensive lineman were able to create bigger holes and the running backs prospered. Multiple ball carriers had big plays, but senior Martine Stevenson and Univ. of Tennessee transfer Tom Smith had the most.

“It was good to see Stevenson and Smith get some good touches and make some plays. We aren’t going to play a guy just because he transferred in, he has to earn it,” Reed said.

The Tigers will continue camp tomorrow at 6:30 a.m. at Hale Stadium
