Volleyball Opens OVC Slate This Weekend

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State opens their chase for the OVC championship this weekend with two conference match-ups. Including a tilt with three-time defending regular season OVC champion Morehead State.

Big Blue is coming off a straight sets victory over HBCU rival South Carolina State in the 49er Invitational.

After sustaining an injury against Alabama A&M last Tuesday All-OVC performer Erika Moss returned to action over the weekend. The senior setter excelled in her return recording 98 assists in the three match 49er invitational including 33 in the team’s win over South Carolina State. Her performance earned the Fort Wayne, Ind. native a spot on the all-tournament team.

Junior outside hitter Naomi Wells continued to pace the Tigers attack picking up 37 kills over the weekend. After recording double-digit kill totals in each of the games over the weekend Wells has now lead the team in kills for seven straight matches.

The Tigers will begin their conference slate Friday for Kids Day against Eastern Kentucky at Kean Hall with opening serve scheduled for 7 p.m. Children of all ages are encouraged to attend for Kids Day as coach Kathy Roulhac Tigers begin their conference schedule.

Followed by a tilt against conference powerhouse Morehead State in Kean Hall the following day at 2 p.m. for The Black Out game. Fans are asked to wear black in support of the Tigers volleyball team as them aim to Black Out the Eagles.

Tennessee State looks to improve upon their 10-6 OVC conference record from a season ago on their way to an OVC tournament semifinals appearance.

Eastern Kentucky comes into the contest on Friday riding a two-match winning streak and supporting a 6-8 record. The Colonels picked up back-to-back wins over University of Albany and Saint Francis University (Pa.) this past weekend.

Two-time All-OVC selection senior outside hitter Ashley Edmond leads the EKU offense, with 178 kills on the year. Edmond is tied for the team lead in kills (178) with junior outside hitter Alexis Plagens.

On Saturday the Tigers will welcome in three-time defending OVC regular season champion Morehead State to Kean Hall. The Eagles picked up where they left off last season racking up a 9-5 non-conference record. This past weekend Morehead State won the Panther Invitational beating Rutgers, Cornell and Pittsburgh on the way to the title.

Morehead State is lead by All-OVC selection Aryn Bohannon. The senior outside hitter has racked up 153 kills to lead the team averaging 2.73 kills per set. Bohannon is joined on the front line with the emergence of sophomore outside hitter Courtney Smith who ranks second on the team in kills 144  posting 3.13 kills per set.

Following the weekend’s matches Tennessee State will host cross-town rival Belmont on Tuesday.
