Track and Field Closes Indoor Season at OVC Tournament

Charleston, Ill. – The Tigerbelles and Flying Tigers each had strong outings at this weekend’s OVC Tournament, placing second and fifth, respectively.

The Tennessee State women’s track and field team earned 95 points, trailing only Southeast Missouri State who had 101. The men’s team garnered 78.5 points which was only 3.5 points away from fourth.

The Tigerbelles got eight points in the first women’s event when Britani Logan placed second in the weight throw with a toss of 18.5 meters. They then received 10 points when Gabrielle Todd won the high jump with a leap of 1.71 meters.

Another winner in the field events was Ashontae Jackson who had a long jump of 6.11 meters in the preliminaries but still took home first place with a hop of 5.91 meters in the finals.

Jackson also earned her team six points in the 400-meter dash and two in the 200-meter. Quanisha Sales got TSU five key points in the 200-meter by placing fourth.

The duo of Jackson and Sales paired with Todd and Breanna Adams to earn a second-place finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 3:48.30- only .10 seconds from first.

Ja’Lyn Burr rounded out the winners for the Tigerbelles by placing first in the triple jump with a 12.25-meter leap. Felecia Oladakun also picked up four points for TSU by placing fifth in the event.

The Flying Tigers’ tournament started off really well with Daryl Rice, Sean Jenkins and Shaquille Cragwall each placing in the high jump. Rice placed first with a hop of 2.06 meters.

Also performing well in the jumps was Royce Dates who placed second in the long jump with final of 7.38 meters. He also finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 14.21 meters.

However, Dates finished behind teammate Tyler Anderson who won the triple jump after hopping 14.45 meters.

Michael Johnson also had a solid weekend for TSU, finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash (22.49 seconds) and seventh in the 400 (50.09).

TSU will try to carry over its success and improve before starting the Outdoor Season on Mar. 15 against Rhodes College in Memphis.
