Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State men’s golf team shot a 9-over, 297 as a team and is in eighth after day one of the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Championships. The Par-72, 6,858 yard GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn., played slow due to the heavy rains in the middle Tennessee area on Wednesday with the temperatures for the first round reaching the mid-60’s and winds between 9-12 mph under Sunny skies.

After the first round, TSU is 13 strokes behind team leader Austin Peay and just five strokes from being in the top four.

On the par-4, 8th, Scitern hit a 9-iron on his second shot onto the green and dropped a 10 foot putt for birdie. Scitern followed on the par-5, 9th, with a sand wedge shot to within 11 inches of the cup for the second straight birdie.

Scitern sat in first with a 3-under at the turn, but bogeyed the first two holes to drop to 1-under. James Stepp played steady throughout the day as he hit eight fairways, 13 greens and 33 putts and scored 13 pars and two birdies. On the par-5, 2nd, Stepp went into the right rough off with his tee shot. The sophomore used a 7-iron to reach the middle of the fairway, leaving 65-yards to the pin.
