Nashville, Tenn. - Competing in their last meet before the OVC Tournament, the Tennessee State track and field teams impressed at this weekend’s Vanderbilt Invitational, especially in the relays.

A week after taking first place in 4x100 at the Boston-Moon Relays, the team of Clairwin Dameus, Ashontae Jackson, Diera Taylor and Quanisha Sales continued their winning ways on Saturday. The tandem of Tigerbelles defeated squads from Virginia Commonwealth, Alabama-Birmingham and Middle Tennessee State by completing the event in 45. 34 seconds.

The Flying Tigers also performed well in the 4x100 as the grouping of Travon Alexander, Tyler Anderson, Jerome Henderson and Michael Johnson placed second. The foursome ran a time of 41.68, just 0.54 seconds behind Middle Tennessee State.

Sales’s success carried over into the individual competitions as the junior came in third in the women’s 200-meter dash with a final of 24.13.

Jackson represented her school well in the women’s 400-meter, placing in fourth after finishing the race in 54.76 seconds. The sophomore also won the long jump with a leap that spanned 5.75 meters.

Another TSU jumper that looked in top form was Flying Tiger Royce Dates. The reigning OVC Male Field Athlete of the Week was again the top collegiate long jumper at the Vanderbilt Invite, hopping 7.38 meters.

Dates also competed in the triple jump and had another strong showing. The junior set a personal-best in the event with a skip of 14.48 meters- the second farthest in the OVC this season.

TSU looked championship ready at this weekend’s cross-town meet, but the squads will have to earn their titles on May 3 when the Tigerbelles and Flying Tigers travel to Charleston, Ill. for the OVC Championship.
