Volleyball closes out regular season on the road

Nashville, Tenn. - The Tennessee State University volleyball team will look to close out the regular season with a couple of wins when the Tigers hit the road to face Murray State and Southeast Missouri State.

TSU will take on Murray State on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in Racer Arena before matching up with Southeast Missouri State on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Houck Fieldhouse.

The Tigers (16-10, 11-7 OVC) had won three straight before most recently dropping a close match to UT Martin on Tuesday night, 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 27-25, 15-25,12-15).

TSU was led by senior Shaquita Williams, who registered a match-high 21 kills. Freshman Rachel Ambroch added 14 kills and 19 digs for a double-double while Senior Terraka Walker led the team with a total of 23 digs and added 10 kills.

Britani Hathorn, Erika Moss, and Calasia Williams each recorded double figures in digs, (19, 16, and 11) respectively.

From a team standpoint, Tennessee State is averaging 12.96 kills per set with a .175 hitting percentage, which has them in second place in the OVC standings.

Shaquita Williams leads the Tigers with 388 kills on the season for a 3.77 kills per set average, to go along with a .308 hitting percentage. Williams also leads the OVC in aces with 38. Walker, who is second on the team with 300 kills on the season, is averaging 2.91 kills per set. Junior Danielle Howell has 229 total kills with a 2.2 kills per set average.

In the first match versus Murray State, TSU defeated MSU 3 - 1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-17) in Kean Hall. TSU also picked up a 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11) home win over Southeast Missouri in the first meeting between the two teams.  

Murray State (8-21, 8-10 OVC) is fighting for an OVC tournament spot as the Racers are currently in a three-way tie for sixth place. Only the top six teams receive a tournament berth. MSU is coming off a 3-0 loss at the hand of Morehead State, Saturday afternoon. The Racers are led by Teresa Krog and Kayleah Sauer. Krog has a total of 347 kills on the season, for a 3.27 kills per set average, while Sauer has a season total of 472 digs, for a 4.54 digs per set.

Southeast Missouri State (12-6, 10-8 OVC) is currently in fourth place in the league standings. The Redhawks are coming off a 3-1 loss to SIU Edwardsville on Tuesday. Collen Yarber leads SEMO with 3.02 kills per frame while Julie Shives registers 3.03 digs per set.
