Volleyball snaps skid with win over Eastern Kentucky

Richmond, Ky. --- The Tennessee State University volleyball team picked up an OVC win by defeating Eastern Kentucky, 3-1, on the road Tuesday night.

With the win, Tennessee State snapped a six-match losing streak and improved to 6-15 (4-9 OVC) while Eastern Kentucky moved to 9-13 (8-5 OVC).

Shaquita Williams led the Tigers with 16 kills while Vicmari Prospero recorded 15 kills behind a scorching .625 hitting percentage.  In 24 attempts, Prospero did not commit any attack errors. Calasia Williams turned in 20 digs while Santia Sanders just missed a double-double with 12 digs and nine kills.

Ashley Edmond registered 14 kills for EKU while Lauren Snyder added 13. Abby O'Conner tallied a match-high 22 digs.

After trailing early, TSU rallied to tie the score, 20-20, in the opening set. Back-to-back errors from the Colonels put TSU on top, 22-20, before a Tiger error made the score, 22-21. TSU sealed the win, 25-21, following timely kills from Vicmari Prospero, Shaquita Williams, and Kamille King.

TSU only hit .111 in the second set while EKU hit .259 and built up an 11-7 lead. The Colonels extended their lead to 21-15 on a Tiger attack error before going on to win, 25-18.

In the third set, TSU led 14-10 before increasing the advantage to 17-10 following a run sparked by a Kamille King service ace. EKU rallied from behind to knot the frame, 23-23, but TSU posted the next two points to pull off the, 25-23 win.

Holding on to a, 2-1, match lead, the Tigers carried the momentum into the fourth set. EKU called a timeout after TSU moved ahead 13-8 on a kill by Erika Moss but the Tigers answered with a 6-1 to swell the lead to 19-9. EKU cut the deficit down to four points but TSU held on to win, 25-19.

Tennessee State registered 54 kills and hit .216 while Eastern Kentucky notched 46 kills and a .139 hitting percentage. TSU also held the advantage in service aces, 10-6, and team blocks, 10-7.

The Tigers return to action this Friday with a match against Tennessee Tech on "Black Out Night." The match is slated for a 7 p.m. start in Kean Hall and all fans are encouraged to wear all black.
