NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Heading into week two, the Tennessee State University volleyball team is hitting its stride.
· Saturday was the Tigers’ first scrimmage of training camp. The team has the exact amount of players to field two teams, which made for an enjoyable matchup. Aside from a few hiccups, which are to be expected on the first scrimmage, the team looked solid and should be ready to go for their first tournament in Fayetteville, Ark.
· The overall theme of camp continues to be defense. Today the team worked on front line blocking drills with a group of Neisha Crockett, Carla Grayson, and Taylor Swayzer up front. Swayzer took charge of the group and helped guide the newcomers. Grayson showed good potential and terrific leaping ability, showcasing her height and wingspan. The talent of the front line is deep this season.
· The defense is in good hands with senior Ileanushka Maldonado. She has the ability to get to any ball and the accuracy to put it right where it needs to be for an attack. She is also a vocal leader on the court which is boosting the good floor chemistry that the Tigers already possess.
· Getting into the teeth of camp, it could be expected of players to be easily irritated with one another, but that’s how strong a bond these girls have. Senior leaders like Swayzer and Maldonado are able to help the newcomers get used to Tiger volleyball without any noticeable pushback. The offseason activities and open gyms would seem to have set a base relationship among the team that is being galvanized through camp.
Countdown – There are 11 days until TSU’s first regular season match at Arkansas. The Tigers’ 2014 season starts a day earlier than last year.
