Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee State volleyball team looks to carry the momentum from its straight sets win over Alabama A&M into this weekend’s 49er Invitational. The Tigers will play three matches against teams from the Southern Conference, Conference USA and the MEAC over the two-day event.
On Tuesday, junior Naomi Wells paced the team with 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .615. After team leader and standout senior Erika Moss went down with an injury, freshman Taylor Patterson filled in by dishing out 30 assists. As a team the Tigers posted season high .371 hitting percentage in the win.
The Tigers come into the weekend with a record of 2-5.
TSU will open up play in the 49er Invite on Friday with a matchup against Elon. The Phoenix bring a record of (5-7) into the contest. They are lead by junior middle blocker Kris Harris who has 120 kills on the year with a .328 hitting percentage.
Play will continue Saturday when the Tigers will play host Charlotte at 12:30 p.m. The 49ers come into the weekend on a four-match winning streak and an overall record of 7-4. Sophomore setter Britney Leigh Held leads the team with 441 assists averaging 11.31 assists per set for the Niners.
Tennessee State will wrap up the invitational Saturday afternoon against HBCU rival South Carolina State at 4:30 p.m. The Bulldogs enter the weekend looking to pick up their first win after starting the year 0-10. Sophomore setter Melanie Williams has racked up 173 assists on the young season for an average of 6.41 assists per set.
